COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) -

Police in northern Idaho say an officer shot and killed a pit bull that lunged at him Wednesday morning from the window of a parked van near downtown Coeur d'Alene.

Sgt. Jeff Walther of the Coeur d'Alene Police Department tells The Spokesman-Review that officers responded at about 11 a.m. to reports of a suspicious van, with someone possibly watching young children.

Walther says the pit bull lunged from the driver's side window at the officer's face and the officer fired one round. The officer wasn't injured.

The van wasn't occupied. Police are trying to locate the owner.
