Rigby HIgh School Anti-Drug Movie

RIGBY, Idaho -      The anti-drug message is not always the easiest to get across to teens, but when the message comes from teenagers themselves, it seems to hold more meaning. 

The student council class at Rigby High School made a movie about the dangers of drugs, partying and alcohol.

The film "Reality" was produced by the students in about three weeks and edited with help from Adfire Creative, a local production company.The movie is a graphic portrayal of substance abuse and its role in teenage life.

Rigby High School Senior, Audrey Lugar said "We know lots of people who have struggles with that type of thing and we thought it was a good message to give to the students."

Senior Alyssa Miller said many of her friends praised their film and respected its honest depiction of death as a result of drugs and alcohol abuse. "This video made them cry of course, but I've had them talk to me and they said how real it was and how it can really happen," said Miller.

The film was shown to the student body, parents and teachers at an assembly. Senior Carson Cole watched his peers as they screened the movie. "It was ironic that some of the partiers at our school understood that this can like actually happen to them." Cole also learned a lesson while making the movie, "I'm one of those kids who looks up to the partiers as the cool kids, and I think I learned that partying is not that great and an accident is going to happen sooner or later so you may as well not be involved," he added.

Local police departments, Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center and parents in the community volunteered hours of their time to educate the students and help them spread the message that drugs and alcohol, and the dangers from them are in fact, a reality.

The movie has more than 4,000 hits on YouTube. It does include graphic scenes of student using drugs and alcohol, but no actual drugs and alcohol were used. The students hope to use video production as a new platform to reach teenagers in future films.
