Uintah County sheriff's officials say they're trying to determine how authorities forgot a teenage girl in a holding cell and how long she stayed there after the courthouse closed.
Sheriff Jeff Merrell tells the Deseret News the girl was fine after the incident Thursday, noting she had a toilet and sink with running water in the cell. But he says officials are concerned about the mishap and are "looking at that accountability."
The newspaper reports bailiffs had placed the girl in the cell at the 8th District Court after a juvenile court hearing. She was waiting for transportation to the nearby Split Mountain Youth Detention Center, but was apparently forgotten and later discovered after the court closed for the day.
Merrell says he's reviewing officer reports and surveillance tape.
