In a closed executive session, Bonneville School District ratified contract negotiations Wednesday. After months of deliberation and a 10-hour discussion day last week, the District 93 School Board came to a decision on teacher's contracts.
The compromise raises teachers' salary based on their years of experience and their education level, essentially giving back a "steps and lanes" program the state had cut.
Teachers also asked for the agreement to address transferring between schools, and a grievance procedure if the contract was violated. Neither of these ended up directly in the contract. Instead, the agreement says these issues will be discussed in a monthly professional council meeting.
The contract gives bonuses to teachers this year based on longevity. That bonus means $750 for teachers with 15-19 years of experience, $1,000 for 20-29 years, and $1,250 extra for over 30 years of experience.
"I think everyone should make a little more money. It's certainly not enough but it's a step in the right direction," said Dr. Chuck Shackett, superintendent of District 93.
The new master agreement also gives elementary teachers 200 minutes of planning time per five-day work week.
According to the district, the Bonneville Education Association also ratified the contracts on Tuesday.
