The Cleveland Browns see Johnny Manziel as their backup quarterback until further notice, team owner Jimmy Haslam said on Monday, according to ESPN.com
Haslam said Browns coach Mike Pettine told Manziel to start acting "like a backup quarterback."
Haslam said Brian Hoyer is the team's starting quarterback, and he will remain the starter until Manziel proves he is capable of leading the team.
Manziel "is not the starter. Johnny's the backup," Haslam said, according to the report.
Those statements by Haslam do not eliminate the possibility that Manziel will become the starter by the time the regular-season opener rolls around. The last five quarterbacks drafted in the first round have all been their teams' Week One starters.
