Senior guard Richard Carter scored 20 points to help the Drake Bulldogs hold on for a 70-62 victory over visiting Loyola-Chicago Ramblers on Saturday at Knapp Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Sophomore guard Jordan Daniels came off the bench to score 12 points for Drake (13-13, 4-10 Missouri Valley Conference), which snapped a four-game losing streak. Senior center Seth VanDeest had eight points and 12 rebounds.
Freshman guard Milton Doyle had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Loyola (9-17, 4-10), which lost five of its last six. Junior forward Christian Thomas added 16 points and six rebounds.
Drake mounted an early 11-1 run to go up by seven with 14:20 remaining in the opening period. A 7-0 spurt later in the half put the Bulldogs up 30-16 when senior forward Aaron Hawley made a 3-pointer with 3:18 to go. Thomas answered with back-to-back baskets to cut the lead to 10 with just over a minute remaining, but Daniels made a jumper with 40 seconds left to give his team a 34-22 lead at intermission.
Drake went up 41-27 on a 3-pointer by junior guard Chris Caird with 16:41 remaining in the second half. Loyola responded with a 7-0 run, cutting the Bulldogs' lead to 41-34 on a layup by Troy Nixon with 14:26 to go.
Drake staged an 11-2 run to go up 52-36 on a 3-pointer by Daniels with 11:22 to play. Loyola outscored Drake 11-3 over the next eight minutes and cut the deficit to three on a 3-point play by Doyle with 1:04 remaining, but the Bulldogs made seven of eight free throws in the final 31 seconds to secure the victory.
