The New York Jets announced the hiring of LSU assistant coach Thomas McGaughey as their new special teams coordinator.

McGaughey joins coach Rex Ryan's staff to replace Ben Kotwica, who was hired by the Washington Redskins last month in the same position.

McGaughey finished his third season as LSU's special teams coordinator. Before that, he was with the New York Giants for four seasons as their assistant special teams coordinator.

He also had coaching stints with the Denver Broncos in 2005-06, the University of Houston in 2003-04, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Scottish Claymores of NFL Europe in 2002.
