Patriots place LB Spikes on IR
The New England Patriots announced Monday that they placed linebacker Brandon Spikes on injured reserve with a knee injury.
Spikes, 26, played in all 16 regular-season games (12 starts) in 2013 and was second on the team with 134 tackles.
Spikes has 384 tackles in 51 career NFL games (40 starts). He also has 45 tackles in six postseason games.
Spikes has been battling the injury for weeks, spending extra time riding the stationary bike during practice. He limped off the field with trainers during the regular-season finale after missing a tackle on Buffalo Bills running back C.J. Spiller.
Spikes will be a free agent after the season, and his future with the team is very much in doubt at this point.
His absence leaves the Patriots linebacking corps rather thin. The group already lost Pro Bowler Jerod Mayo to a chest injury early in the season.
