Texas president says he stands behind coach Brown

University of Texas president Williams Powers said Thursday that football coach Mack Brown isn't leaving the Austin school.

Brown, who has received grief after the Longhorns finished the season 8-4, received a vote of confidence from Powers in a post on the president's blog.

"Now that the Longhorn football team has finished its regular season, there has been an increase in media speculation about Coach Mack Brown's future. I'd like to state unequivocally that Coach Brown has my full support as well as the support of Men's Athletics Director DeLoss Dodds. Put succinctly, Mack Brown is and will remain the Longhorns' head football coach.

"Coach Brown restored Texas' winning tradition. He embodies the Texas character, is a superb ambassador for The University of Texas, and runs a program that is both winning and clean, a program that all alumni and fans can and should be proud of."

Brown, who has been at Texas for 15 years since he was hired from North Carolina, has a 149-43 record as Longhorns coach. Texas is scheduled to play Oregon State in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29, the 13th bowl under Brown.

However, Brown has been under fire from fans and media because the team has not returned to a BCS bowl game since losing to Alabama in the 2010 national championship game. Also, Texas has lost the last three Red River Rivalry games against Oklahoma, including 55-17 and 63-21 losses in the last two games.
