New Jersey coach Peter DeBoer called it a tough decision to go with Schneider as the No. 1 goalie considering Brodeur's stature in the game.

Schneider's save percentage is better than Brodeur's .865 so far this season. Schneider's latest start was a 4-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night when he allowed three goals on 23 shots.

The Devils also recalled defenseman Eric Gelinas from Albany of the AHL when captain Bryce Salvador left the team after learning of a death in his family. Salvador will not play Thursday.
