Flood Waters Move Downstream In Bonneville Co.
POSTED: 1:29 am MST February 23, 2012UPDATED: 2:44 pm MST February 23, 2012BONNEVILLE COUNTY, Idaho -- Hundreds of volunteers, anchored by Ammon firefighters battled through the night to hold back flood waters along a canal in Ammon overnight. Bonneville County authorities say the flooding affected the area along the Ammon foothills including neighborhoods near 55th East and Lincoln Road and the Cortland Ridge neighborhood near Woodland Hills Elementary School.Local News 8 anchor Kylie Bearse was on the scene. She reports volunteers filled and placed over two thousand sandbags to help protect homes in the affected areas. Jefferson County has agreed to supply another five thousand sandbags to help in the effort today.Early Thursday, crews were working to locate canal blockages that may have contributed to the flooding.
Channel 3 Eyewitness News Anchor Todd Kunz, who was among the volunteers, reports as many as a dozen homes sustained damage. At least two recorded between 18 and 24 inches of water in basement rooms where flood water broke through windows.High winds also caused thousands of dollars in damage throughout the region, rooting up large trees, damaging playground equipment, fences, and roofs.First Alert Forecaster Ido Walker says the high winds and warm temperatures that contributed to the flooding are expected to subside today.
