Eyelash extension potential dangers

Possible eyelash extension dangers

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI/KIDK) - A popular beauty trend comes with some dangers. Eyelash extensions look good, but you could be putting your health at risk.

"One of them is an allergy. The glues that we use for those lash extensions can cause allergy and itching and redness around the eye. The other potential problem is infection and that's the one we're really concerned about," says Dr. Catherine E. Durboraw MD, Oculoplastic Surgeon

Infections can have some pretty extreme results.

"When you have something that's abrading the surface of the eye you can end up with a cornea ulcer, infection and those can cause permanent scarring and vision loss," says Dr. Durboraw.

In some cases, you can even develop mites on your eyelashes.

"When you're not properly maintaining the hygiene of your eyelids, which I think often happens with lash extensions because if you really cleanse your face thoroughly you're going to make you lash extensions fall off so you stop cleansing that area. You're going to have an excess production of sebum in the area and you may have an activation of those mites which could lead to Blepharitis which is an uncomfortable condition."

Austin Kade Academy trains students in applying extensions. Their CEO says you have to make sure you go to professionals

"You want to go to are shops that are licensed professions. Beauty space these are people that have to take boards and are held to standards," says Tyler Price.

They say it works both ways.

"Find someone who knows what they're doing and going to apply it correctly and do your due diligence and take care of those lashes in between appointments," says Julie Whitehead, licensed Cosmetologist and Vice President of Austin Kade.

Both sides agree that you need to go to professionals. One way to assure that you are, look at reviews and do your research. There are alternatives, professionals recommend the serum, Latisse to grow longer eyelashes.
