Local nonprofit wins $5,000 competitive grant

IDAHO FALL, Idaho (KIFI/KIDK) - A local nonprofit has won a highly competitive grant worth $5,000.

Zonta International awarded Operation Shield the grant as part of its centennial anniversary. The grant is to recognize organizations that work to improve the lives of women and girls in communities.

"I felt like this was a perfect opportunity to help children at risk that are being trafficked," said Natalie Steffler, the president-elect of Zonta International.

Operation Shield focuses on helping victims of human trafficking. The nonprofit said the money will go toward continuing to further their mission.

"We're very excited," said Matthew Smith, the executive director of Operation Shield. "It will help us in the treatment portion of our program."

Zonta International received 289 applications for the grant. Only 62 were selected.
